PropertyOfZack Interview : : D.R.U.G.S.

propertyofzack:

PropertyOfZack chatted with Matt Good from D.R.U.G.S. not too long ago for a brief interview. Matt and I discussed the band’s first year in 2011, leaving Decaydance Records, touring, future music, and more. Read up and enjoy!

For the record, could you state your name in D.R.U.G.S.?
My name is Matt and I play guitar in D.R.U.G.S.

The band is kicking off 2012 in a big way, but 2011 featured your debut record, a spot on the AP Tour, Warped Tour, and much more. Can you just sort of discuss how great of an opening year it was for you?
We had all those tours like you mentioned, and we tried to push the record. We made a lot of great friends and had a lot of good times. Now this is the accumulation of all that hard work with headlining. We’re giving kids a longer show and what they’ve wanted.

The band obviously has an all-star lineup, but it’s still got to be difficult to do all of that within the first year regardless of your prior experiences. Was it tough at all?
There were some hard moments here and there. When you do it for a really long time, you end up getting used to things being a certain way. It’s been funny to come to some of these venues that our previous bands sold out in 5 seconds and having them not even be sold out. It helps to have that background though, but you can’t think it’s automatically going to translate.

A year later, are you happy with the response to the self-titled record?
Yeah, it’s been great. Hopefully the next batch of songs we release will be a nice progression from that since we’ve gotten to know each other quite well over the year.

Regardless of how great of a first year you had, things for D.R.U.G.S. are definitely changing a bit with the departure from Decaydance. Is the band operating differently now since the shift?
Yeah, we’ve gone through a lot of changes. Leaving the label, I don’t even give a shit. When that happened, it doesn’t matter to me. I’m the kind of person that doesn’t get stressed over things like that. Having a label isn’t necessary and is borderline pointless right now with the Internet and everything. People are going to take our music for free, so why not give it to them. So I’m probably going to start doing that.

Bassist Adam Russell also left the band before this tour. Have fans been supportive of the change?
Yeah, no one’s brought it up. When they meet our bass player they say something. We’re bummed, but it’s natural. It hasn’t held us back, but I personally miss him. He’s a really good friend of mine. We’re still having fun though.
